Walk Away From Arthritis

Physical activity alleviates pain and improves ability to move around in people with arthritis. A recent study published in Arthritis & Rheumatism concluded very few people with arthritis take this seriously.

Researchers at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine used an accelerometer to evaluate the physical activity of more than 1000 people with arthritis of the knee, age 49 to 84 for one week. They found that 40% of men and over 55% of women were inactive to the point of being labeled “couch potatoes”.

Federal guidelines recommend adults with arthritis participate in 150 minutes of moderate intensity, low impact exercise. In other words walk every day for about 20 minutes.

This leaves one to ponder, how could someone not find 20 minutes a day to relieve the pain and subsequent destruction of their joints? Also since arthritis occurs more in the retired population, how could someone say they don’t have the time to walk?

Conclusively, walking daily for 20 minutes helps prevent arthritis as well as reduce pain when arthritis is present. Joint protection should be a priority for all.
