Blood Pressure

Latest Research on Controlling High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure increases the risk of heart disease and stroke, the leading causes of death among Americans. It is called the “silent killer” because you usually don’t have any symptoms when your blood pressure is too high. Several medications are available to treat hypertension and ten percent of hypertension patients may need as many as three drugs to control their condition. Following the DASH (Dietary Aproach to Stop Hypertension) diet and using natural remedies have in some studies been shown to be as or more effective than prescription medications. Research to better understand exactly how blood pressure is regulated continues.

Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine have identified two proteins that appear to regulate blood pressure. According to a recent study published in the online version of Cardiovascular Research, researchers have discovered that the cells lining the blood vessels, or the endothelium, produce a protein called nitric oxide. Nitric oxide promotes blood vessel dilation and increases blood flow.

Through culture cell and mice experiments, it was discovered that a protein called thrombospondin-1 (TSP1) and its receptors inhibit the activation of an enzyme, which in turn limits the production of nitric oxide.

Researchers speculate that developing agents that alter the activity of this enzyme by blocking the production of nitric oxide has the potential to be a novel alternative to blood pressure drugs.

While this work is in its infantile stage, it is prove that when blood vessels constrict, blood pressure goes up. Blood pressure is a direct measurement of how much pressure is in the arties of the body as opposed to the veins. Since arteries have the ability to constrict and relax (dilate), understanding the effects when this occurs is important. Studies continue to point out that the cells lining the arteries are capable of producing nitric oxide, which subsequently relaxes the arteries. Relaxation of arteries translates to lower blood pressure. While such research is to be applauded, current research already proves that diet and lifestyle changes, along with supplementation, help naturally regulate blood pressure.
