Blood pressure that is slightly above normal can still cause stroke according to a study published in the medical journal Neurology through the American Academy of Neurology.
Researchers analyzed the results of 12 studies involving 518,520 individuals. Prehypertension is defined as blood pressure with a systolic (top number) between 120 and 139, and diastolic (bottom number) between 80 and 89.
People with prehypertension were 50% more likely to have a stroke compared to people with normal blood pressure even after accounting for other stroke risk factors including age, sex, diabetes, obesity, cholesterol and smoking. In addition people under 65 with prehypertension were 80% more likely to suffer from a stroke than those with normal blood pressure.
This underscores the importance of diet, exercise and supplements to maintain a healthy blood pressure which should be less than 120 over 80. Stroke is caused by damage to the brain as a result of elevated blood pressure and even a slight elevation can be cause for concern.
