New studies are now documenting and quantifying the many benefits of red clover. This versatile flower has had a long history in women’s health to alleviate symptoms of estrogen insufficiency and help restore hormonal balance.
A study published in the medical journal Gynecology Endocrinology demonstrated that in postmenopausal women who were overweight, red clover provided significant benefits. They gave women 80 mg of red clover isoflavones daily for 90 days. The results showed that this supplementation resulted in decreased total cholesterol and LDL.
In a second study reported in the journal Fertility and Sterility, researchers noted the benefits of isoflavones in animals with surgically induced menopause. The researchers found that supplementing with isoflavones lead to significant improvement in bone density, tissue integrity, and vaginal blood flow. In animals, this should translate into less vaginal dryness, less hot flashes, and improved bone density.
