Taking antidepressant drugs including Prozac, Paxil, Effexor, Wellbutrin and others increases a women's risk of Breast Cancer. This is according to a comprehensive review of over 60 studies done examining this.

Over 27 million people, mostly women take antidepressants and the majority of prescriptions are not from a Psychiatrist but rather from Gynecologist and Family Practice doctors. These drugs are being given for mood swings, headache, back pain, hot flashes, neuropathy and eating disorders. Antidepressants are the third most commonly prescribed drug behind cholesterol and pain medications.

The SSRI, select serotonin reuptake inhibitor, antidepressants studied found now to cause Breast Cancer have also been associated with increased risk of Stroke, Heart Disease, birth defects, weight gain and oddly enough psychological problems leading to suicide.

Current policy is to get mammograms, Race For The Cure, and wear pink ribbons to create Breast Cancer awareness. While these are to be applauded, they do not prevent Breast Cancer. Diet, exercise, lifestyle modification, supplements and avoiding the SSRI antidepressant drugs are valuable ways to prevent Breast Cancer.
