Cabbage Compound Helps Kill Cancer Cells

CABBAGE could play a key role in destroying breast cancer cells, researchers say.

A study has found that a compound called indole-3-carbinol (I3C) in green vegetables, such as Brussels sprouts and cabbage, destroys cancer cells when used in combination with traditional chemotherapy drugs.

Researchers now hope to move to tests in patients to see whether it could be used to improve treatments.

Health experts already recommend eating a balanced diet, including fresh fruit and vegetables, to improve wellbeing and help to prevent some cancers.

Now more evidence is emerging about the benefits of particular molecules in food which could be exploited in a more concentrated form to create supplements to help drugs to work more effectively.

Scientists from the Medical Research Council have shown that I3C extracted from vegetables such as cabbage could eventually help breast cancer patients.

Speaking at the National Cancer Research Institute conference in Birmingham, Professor Margaret Manson said that I3C could help to kill off breast cancer cells, or at least to stop more developing.

It did this by causing changes in the cells which made them more vulnerable to anti-cancer drugs. This made the treatments more effective than they would be on their own.
