HRT Causes Lung Cancer

It has long been known that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) increases risk of breast and ovarian cancer, but new research demonstrates that it leads to increased lung cancer risk as well. Women ages 50 to 76, who take HRT, even if they are non-smokers, have a 50% increased risk of lung cancer.
The study included 36,588 women and demonstrated the risk of lung cancer was "duration-dependent"; this meaning that the longer the woman was on HRT, the greater the risk. The highest risk was 50% at 10 years of HRT. In addition, the longer the use, the more advanced the lung cancer. With the advancement in the cancer stage comes more difficulty in finding the cure and the worse the prognosis.
This research was conducted in the Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine and published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. The head researcher warns that even though HRT is currently only supposed to be used for less than six months, millions of women are at risk because of previous prescribing practices.
