Popular Drug Combo Causes Diabetes

It is estimated that over 1 million Americans take a combination of an antidepressant drug with cholesterol-lowering medication. All prescription medications have side effects averaging about a hundred each, however when two drugs are prescribed together, a third list of side effects of nearly one hundred is also added. Of all the classes of medications, antidepressants and other psychiatric medications have the most side effects – in upwards of 525. When drugs are mixed together, the number of side effects becomes almost incalculable.

A study from Stanford University published in Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics reviewed data from the FDA and Harvard and Vanderbilt Universities to identify drug interactions that would not be apparent to doctors. They reviewed two drugs often prescribed together: the antidepressant Paxil and the cholesterol-lowering medication Pravachol; and noted that, together, they raise blood sugar levels.

Pre-diabetes is defined as having a fasting blood sugar level between 100 and 125. Diabetes is diagnosed when blood sugar exceeds 126.

In the study, non-diabetics took both Paxil and Pravachol. Blood sugar rose on average 19 mg/dl. In diabetics however, blood sugar increased an average of 48 mg/dl. Clearly, these two drugs should not be taken together, as they have dangerous effects on people's blood sugar. While it was just these two drugs that were studied, it is reasonable to assume that the combination of any cholesterol-lowering medication with an antidepressant would be potentially harmful.
