Eye drops containing the essential fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid, significantly reduce symptoms of dry eye syndrome in animals.
ALA is an Omega-3 fatty acid that is not made by the body and must be obtained through diet or supplements. Dry eyes affects 10 million people in the United States and cause symptoms such as stinging, burning, irritation or a feeling of scratchiness.
Treatment options are limited. A study was done on animals where they were given eye drops of the essential fatty acid and the dry eye dramatically improved.
Further research has shown that taking an essential fatty acids supplement is beneficial for dry eye syndrome.
