Mushrooms Support the Immune System

Mushrooms could give the human immune system a hand in attacking foreign invaders according to recent research conducted on mice. Research gathered on mice will translate into humans as well.
Mushrooms have long been used in traditional medicine and mushroom extracts are popular as dietary supplements. Studies of individual components of mushrooms in the laboratory and animals suggest that mushroom extracts increase the immune system’s ability to fight tumors. Researchers performed a series of experiments involving several different types of mushrooms including crimini, maitake, oyster, shiitake, and traditional culinary white button mushrooms. The researchers were not surprised to find that the least beneficial of the mushrooms was the standard culinary white button mushrooms. They fed the medicinal mushrooms and also gave a chemical to trigger the growth of colon inflammation and colon cancer to animals. They noted the animals given the mushrooms were protected from colon injury. It is expected that the beneficial effects will also be seen in humans.
