No matter when women start taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT), high doses of the treatment increase the risk of stroke. According to the Archive of Internal Medicine, women who took high doses of hormones increase the risk of stroke by as much as 62%. This mirrors many other studies that show the association between HRT and stroke.

The study indicates that HRT is associated with an increased risk of stroke regardless of the hormone regime or the timing of HRT initiation. They concluded that the data strongly reflects increased risk of stroke and that this risk could be minimized by taking lower doses for the shortest amount of time. The authors concluded that the advice to women is that if they are taking HRT take the lowest dose possible for the shortest amount time and monitor themselves carefully for side effects.
